Asphalt Shingle Recycling: Challenges, Markets, and Innovation
Asphalt shingles remain the most popular roofing material in the United States, generating roughly 13 million tons of waste annually from manufacturing scrap and tear-offs. Because asphalt shingles can take up to 400 years to decompose in landfills, sustainable disposal is critical. Yet, according to Business Insider, only about 10% of this annual waste currently reaches material recovery facilities.
