Brazil: Violent deaths drop 8.2% nationwide in 2025; femicides rise 4%

The 20th edition of the Brazilian Yearbook of Public Security, released this Thursday (Jul. 23), shows that the number of intentional violent deaths (MVI) in Brazil fell from 20.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024 to 19.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2025, representing an 8.2 percent decrease. This is the lowest level recorded since 2012, when the index was first measured. In absolute numbers, 40,775 intentional violent deaths were recorded last year, compared with 44,127 in 2024. In 2025, the MVI rate fell below 20 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in Brazil for the first time. In 2012, this rate stood at 27.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Last year, there were decreases in intentional homicide (-10%), robbery resulting in death (-17%), and bodily injury resulting in death (-15,2%). The data show, however, that deaths resulting from police interventions and femicides increased by 5.4 percent and 4 percent, respectively. Femicides In 2025, the yearbook recorded that 44.4 percent of women murdered in Brazil were killed for gender-based reasons - the highest proportion since the crime was added to the Brazilian Penal Code in 2015. In absolute numbers, 1,571 women were victims of femicide in 2025, an average of 4.3 deaths per day. This corresponds to a national rate of 1.4 victims per 100,000 women, representing a 4 percent increase compared with 2024. Attempted femicides, according to the Yearbook, also continued to rise in 2025. There were 4,189 female victims of attempted femicide, a 5.9 percent increase compared with 2024; in other words, for every completed femicide recorded in Brazil in 2025, there were nearly three attempted femicides.
