Brazilian volleyball now requires genetic testing for female athletes

The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) announced that only athletes of biological female sex will be allowed to participate in competitions organized by the entity. The new policy was published Friday (Aug. 14) on the confederation’s website. According to the confederation, the new criterion aims to comply with the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The 41-year-old player, who plays for Osasco São Cristóvão Saúde, said, “It’s a huge step backward in the fight for recognition and inclusion. We’ve gone back to the humiliating way athletes were tested in the 1960s and 1970s,” said Tifanny in a statement shared by the press office of Osasco São Cristóvão Saúde, a Series A team in the Brazilian championship. “I will not remain silent, and I will take every possible measure to ensure that my fight for the right to visibility, inclusion, and the practice of sports has not been in vain,” said the athlete, who has played women’s volleyball since 2017 and won the Superliga championship in 2025, becoming the first transgender athlete to win Brazil’s premier tournament in the sport. In February this year, Supreme Court Justice Cármen Lúcia ruled in favor of Tiffany’s participation in Osasco’s match against SESC RJ Flamengo. In her ruling, the justice found that the rule was unconstitutional and represented a step backward in policies promoting gender equality and human dignity.
