World Refugee Day: Asylum requests rose 11% in Brazil last year
Data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) indicate that asylum requests in Brazil increased by 11 percent in 2025. The agency also notes that there has been progress in national policies to ensure access to legal residency, employment, essential services, and opportunities for inclusion. The increase in applications in Brazil follows the trend across the Americas, which last year was the region with the highest number of forcibly displaced people, surpassing Eastern and Southern Africa and the Middle East. Notícias relacionadas:Lula affirms Brazil will remain open to receiving Venezuelan refugees. The number of refugees in the Americas reached 22.8 million people. They are mainly Venezuelan citizens. On Saturday (Jun. 20), World Refugee Day, UNHCR’s representative in Brazil Davide Torzilli stated that this is a day of warning – more than 117 million people are still forcibly displaced worldwide, even though this number has declined for the first time in more than a decade. “From the ashes of World War II emerged a promise – to protect people forced to flee conflict, violence, and persecution. The international community is collectively failing these millions of people,” he declared. Torzilli called on authorities around the world to promote self-reliance, independence, and long-term solutions for refugees, in addition to humanitarian aid. “This means facilitating access to formal employment and entrepreneurship, recognizing qualifications, expanding training opportunities, and strengthening inclusion policies for those who can no longer rely on their home countries to protect their lives. Protecting a refugee means protecting society as a whole.” This year, UNHCR’s campaign for World Refugee Day urges younger generations to defend the right to asylum as a common good for all humanity and the foundation of international protection. The chosen slogan is “Until Everyone is Safe.”
